TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language

Introduction

The TOEFL iBT measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.

Scoring

  • The iBT version of the TOEFL test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points.
  • Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) receives a scaled score from 0 to 30. The scaled scores from the four sections are added together to determine the total score.
  • Each speaking question is initially given a score of 0 to 4, and each writing question is initially given a score of 0 to 5. These scores are converted to scaled scores of 0 to 30.
  • The TOEFL Score is valid for 2 years from the date of examination.

One of the sections of the test will include extra, uncounted material. Educational Testing Service includes extra material in order to pilot test questions for future test forms. When test - takers are given a longer section, they should give equal effort to all of the questions because they do not know which question will count and which will be considered extra. For example, if there are four reading passages instead of three, then three of those passages will count and one of the passages will not be counted. Any of the four passages could be the uncounted one.

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. The SAT is owned, published, and developed by the College Board, a nonprofit organization in the United States.

Many colleges use the SAT Subject Tests for admission, for course placement, and to advise students about course selection. Some colleges specify the SAT Subject Tests that they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take.

The current SAT Reasoning Test, introduced in 2005, takes three hours and forty - five minutes to finish, and costs $50 ($81 International), excluding late fees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAT - cite_note - costs - 2Possible scores range from 600 to 2400, combining test results from three 800 - point sections (Mathematics, Critical Reading, and Writing). Taking the SAT or its competitor, the ACT, is required for freshman entry to many, but not all, universities in the United States.

SAT Format
SAT consists of three major sections:

Each section receives a score on the scale of 200 - 800. All scores are multiples of 10. Total scores are calculated by adding up scores of the three sections. Each major section is divided into three parts.

GMAT - Graduate Management Admission Test

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized, computer - based assessment as part of the selection criteria for admission into a wide range of graduate management programs, including MBA, Master of Accountancy, and Master of Finance programs in B - Schools.

The GMAT consists of four main sections

How does it work?

For each multiple - choice section of the GMAT exam, there is a large pool of potential questions ranging from a low to high level of difficulty. Each section of the test starts with a question of moderate difficulty. If you answer the first question correctly, the computer will usually give you a harder question. If you answer the first question incorrectly, your next question will be easier. This process will continue until you complete the section, at which point the computer will have an accurate assessment of your ability level in that subject area.

In a computer - adaptive test, only one question at a time is presented. Because the computer scores each question before selecting the next one, you may not skip, return to, or change your responses to previous questions.

How is my score determined?
Your score is determined by:

  • The number of questions you answer
  • Whether you answer the questions correctly or incorrectly
  • The level of difficulty and other statistical characteristics of each question.

The questions in an adaptive test are weighted according to their difficulty and other statistical properties, not according to their position in the test.
Are all questions counted?

Every test contains trial multiple - choice questions being pretested for use in a real exam. These questions are not identified and appear in different locations within the test. You should, therefore, do your best on all questions. Answers to trial questions are not counted in the scoring of your test.
